Agreed. I also suggest we do something in the fictional category, though I continue to uphold the proposed ban of the likes of Clancy, Grisham, and anything else with cookie-cutter plotlines.
I am going to suggest a book I have already read, and maybe some of you have seen the movie (although it would be better if you haven't for the book, as movies can never live up to the books). "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. It is an amazing fiction book that gives a great insight into the life of a boy growing up in Afghanistan and the turmoil and inherent racism present there. There are probably a few of you that have read it (Nick, Ben, Cameron...), but it is a good book to discuss.
This is the book I want to suggest, if not for this next month, then maybe the one after. I'll not suggest any Grisham books, and never would suggest Clancy (too long for a book club) out of respect for Nick (although I do think you can learn things from those type of books as well).
I will be on hiatus through the middle of June with Ben with eight finals and Step 1 of the Boards coming up on June 14th, so if you guys want another book, feel free.
I haven't read Kite Runner, but have only heard great things. My vote would be for Joshua Ferris "And Then We Came to an End." It's supposed to be awesome and hilarious. I've already picked a book though, so I will defer to the group.
I read Kite Runner, but it was a while ago. Great book. It would be a good one for the group. My only argument AGAINST this book would that if Hatch is going to be gone for the book he suggested, maybe we should wait so that he can contribute as well--even though the current track record of those selecting books and actually commenting on them has been poor (Smurf and Jimmy).
"And Then We Came to an End" would be a logical followup to "The World is Flat"--it takes place in a failing ad agency during the Internet boom.
I would also reiterate my earlier suggestion of "My Name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok. Other suggestions that I think would be good...
"You Shall Know Our Velocity!" by Dave Eggers
"A Hero of Our Time" by Lermontov (one of the classics from Russian literature...it's good I promise!)
"Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk (if "Fortress" offended you, maybe we should skip this, but it you can't understand or appreciate the film or life in general if you haven't read this book.)
Those are my suggestions. Let me know what you all think.
I have been commenting on my book sucker! I was a little disappointed to learn that it was 550 pages though, that's like the bible without the weird numbers and references at the bottom of each page. I will do better though, I was going to read last night butI fell asleep. I woke up this morning at 7:00 in my clothes from last night face down on my couch!
I've really enjoyed this book so far (I'm only half way through). It's not a great book club book. It doesn't really start much of a conversation as evidenced by the fact that there has only been one post with comments on the book. I've seen the Kite Runner movie, and I'm not opposed to reading it. It's an incredible story. I think it would be a great book to discuss. Since I have seen the movie, I wouldn't be heart broken if we didn't read it. I am interested in reading his next book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns". Whatever. I'm not ready to make my choice.
Considering the many options people have thrown out, I'm with Nick in waiting to read the Kite Runner until I can do it. I hope you guys find a good book.
